Becoming a Web 2.0 Jedi

Thinking about the ever deeper levels of involvement one can have with Web 2.0 apps and the Web 2.0 ethos. Came up with this chart.

Thoughts?

    Great chart!

    That’s it exactly!

  2. Gaetan Dhont says:

Thanks to Barthox, who pointed this to me.

Ticking the boxes that are applicable to me is effectively interesting 🙂

  3. Gaetan Dhont says:

You could add a root layer which would relate to basic internet usage in grey for example. Digital natives are likely to start straight at the Blue layer, while Digital Immigrants are likely to exist in the grey layer and transition / scale up into the layers.

  4. Mia says:

Nice! 🙂 That looks exactly right.

  5. Varun Mahajan says:

You got it absolutely right. I am on a path from level 2 to 3. Let the Force be with me

  6. Becca says:

Does this mean I’m pink now?? I like your chart! Nice blog, btw!

  7. bhc3 says:

Gaetan – thanks for your comments. I actually clicked Barthox’s blog, and saw a post announcing that you had taken the plunge to blog. I’m still pretty new, and so I can guess your experience so far may be similar to mine.

    You’re right about a bottom layer. Maybe it’s Web 1.0? {buy stuff}, {read news sites}, {check email}, {view portal home page}.

Also – your blog is both French and English. Cool.

  8. bhc3 says:

Varun – Level 3 is big jump. Level 2 is giving up little pieces of you (song here…?). Level 3 is a much bigger sharing experience. Share your own life, share your knowledge, share the stuff you find interesting. A big leap for a lot of us used to being more private.

May the Force be with you.

  9. bhc3 says:

Becca! Hey, glad you found the blog. Yup, you’re now Level 2 – commenting on blogs. Sign up for Twitter next there’s a big PR play there anyway. And let me know if you do – I’ll subscribe.

    Great post.

journey from level 1 to 2 is easy. but from level 2 to 3 is much difficult..
this method useful for web starters..
    thanks,
    rajathe

    @ bhc3, about the proposal of Web 1.0 layer…
I like the idea. I believe there is 2 phases in it:
    the passive usage: {read on classical websites}; {email}
    the active usage: {forum}; {internet banking}; {ecommerce(seller/buyer)}

I believe we could apply this passive/active categorization across the other layers too.

  15. Sachendra says:

It’s surprising how accurate your chart is. I’m on level 3

  16. bhc3 says:

Gaetan – you’re raising a good issue. Web 2.0 has such an interactive component to it, at least at the higher levels. What were the interactive parts of Web 1.0? You’ve got them there. And it’s interesting to contrast them to the types of social media interactions we see today.

  17. bhc3 says:

Thanks Sachendra. I saw your blog. Good topics there!

This is truly an awesome tool. This would be a great thing to use in our proposed Tech Camp for Teachers this summer. You covered it all and this would lead to great conversations.

  20. bhc3 says:

Thanks Linda – glad you like the Web 2.0 graphic. Use the graphic how you like! It’s a mix of using tools as well as Web 2.0 behaviors (sharing, participating regardless of the tool).
