Twitter Rolling Out House Ads

Just saw this on my Twitter home page:

twitter-house-ad

I’ve seen one for Twitter widgets and one for Twitter search. They’re “house ads” now – i.e. only for Twitter’s own services. But perhaps these are a precursor to future advertising.

Twitter has to got start making some money somewhere – or it will “fail whale” and users have not been very forthcoming in comments about paying for the service. A single ad per page? Not overkill and probably necessary for Twitter to survive.

I hope they don’t start overloading their page with ads the way every other free service does. I know there’s a business behind it, and they need to keep up with the demand, but didn’t they just get a huge chunk of change to work with Facebook? It’s refreshing to use an ad-less service for a change. I probably wouldn’t use my Twitter account as often if there were banners to battle.

We noticed those as well, we came to the same conclusion you have. At least in theory, this would be a good revenue stream for Twitter.

I just noticed this today. I access Twitter through Tweetdeck on my webtop, so I don’t see those ads. It will definitely be interesting to see what they do with that little space.

Does anyone else wish that they would move the search tool to this top position?
